I know, I know, it has been a month of Sundays since I last posted. But I’m back! (Yay!)
It’s funny … when I initially considered creating a blog I thought, “oh this will be fun and maybe I can earn some money doing this.” After jumping into it I realized a few things: 1) Blogging is a super saturated market (I just dropped some Chemical Engineering terminology on your ass right there! LOL. Sorry… geek moment) 2) There are a shit ton of “experts” telling you how to best manage your blog to gain more followers and make money with your blog 3) Some of these people are making crazy money doing this… but because of reason #1 the probability of doing the same is pretty slim, 4) The amount of information out there on blogging is overwhelming.
In the end I fell into my typical Virgo trap of trying to do things the “right” way. I was reading as much advice as I could from the blogging experts, joined Facebook groups for blogging, followed bloggers on Instagram and Pinterest and it became information overload! In no time my joy of writing disappeared and was replaced by doubt, feelings of inadequacy, and all sorts of bullshit.
It wasn’t until I was on a Periscope with this young lady named Luisa Zhou that I had an ah-ha moment. On her ‘scope she said, referencing businesses, “honestly, it’s YOUR business! You can do anything you want to do in YOUR business.” Yes dammit… I did KNOW that… but I didn’t embrace it and act like it. When she said that it was like light bulbs went off in my head… kind of like how it was when my best friend and I found out we could get a milkshake with our meals at McDonald’s instead of a soda (you should have seen how happy our 20 something asses were that day!)-SMH. It was awesome!
Starting out it’s normal to want to do things the “right way” to increase the odds of success. So that’s what I did! However, in doing this I forgot what works for me and what has helped me succeed in most things I have attempted in life. I forgot to simply be ME and do things MY way… in a way that feels right to me. There is no point in creating this blog and feel miserable maintaining it. As much as I appreciate the vast amount of information out there I have to realize the experts are simply telling people what has worked for them. That doesn’t necessarily mean it will work as well for me. Life is not a one size fits all deal.
So at this point I will say fuck a niche… I’m going to write about whatever floats my boat. I’m not going to worry myself about keywords and SEO and whatever else… I’m just going to do my best to provide my readers with some entertainment and useful content that I hope you enjoy. With that… I say good night. I’ll be back with some new stuff very soon so look out for it.
